The game sold over five million copies by July 2020. It was nominated for various awards and won several, including The Game Award for Game of the Year. Sekiro was praised by critics, complimenting its gameplay and setting and compared it to the Souls games, although opinions on its difficulty were mixed. While creating the game, lead director Hidetaka Miyazaki wanted to create a new intellectual property (IP) that marked a departure from the Souls series of games also made by FromSoftware, and looked to series such as The Mysterious Murasame Castle and Tenchu for inspiration. The game takes place in a fictionalized Japan set during the Sengoku period, and makes strong references to Buddhist mythology and philosophy. ![]() Gameplay is focused on stealth, exploration, and combat, with a particular emphasis on boss battles. It’s something new, something intriguing - and a brutal and definitive statement refuting the idea that FromSoftware is a one-trick pony. A parody of the open-world action genre, Retro City Rampage takes modern game mechanics and mashes. It’s full of masochistic challenges, but it’s also definitely not a Soulsborne game. ![]() It’s a company known for making notoriously difficult games like the Dark Souls series and Bloodborne, and Sekiro shares that lineage. This is the joy and agony of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, developer FromSoftware’s new game. I panic and turn away, running toward what I hope will be safety. He turns to me and, as he charges, I notice the flaming tubes of hay where his horns should be. He roars and stomps and headbutts everything around him in rage. A bull the size of a school bus shreds the structure into a hundred shards before I can reach them. In the distance, maybe 20 yards away, two more enemies chat near a small wooden building. I sneak up behind him, run him through, and he’s gone. My adrenaline surges as I see the next few seconds of my life with absolute clarity. Past a large door, there’s another enemy. I feel like a shinobi god as I collect my loot and move on. His neck sprays blood like a pierced garden hose as he falls to his knees. My next move is a one-hit-kill Deathblow. His strength fails him after my second attack. I swing, but he blocks my attack with his rifle. I land on an enemy grunt, piercing him with my sword and rolling out of my attack in a seamless and deadly ballet. ![]() In Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, I am a bird of prey, and my sword is my talon. I jump from my perch on a roof, diving down to my target. The game follows a shinobi known as Wolf as he attempts to take revenge on a samurai clan who attacked him and kidnapped his lord. If you’ve already got the game and love it as-is, then this port may be largely unnecessary for you, but it’s the version I’ll likely be recommending to people from here on out.Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an action-adventure video game developed by FromSoftware and published by Activision. ![]() Those of you who had a tough time getting into Retro City Rampage before might find that this enhanced 3DS port is just what you needed. It changes how much visual information you take in and when you absorb it, which can have a huge effect on your overall experience. NES Remix showed us how different it is to play 2D games like Balloon Fight and Mario Bros. The base game is the same, but the camera is zoomed in and dynamic, making for a very different feeling. I just downloaded the game and so far, it’s my favorite rendition yet. That’s about to change tomorrow when the comedy action open world crime fantasy sees release on Nintendo’s handheld under the moniker Retro City Rampage DX.
